Eric Mendel: Redefining Long-Term Care

Eric Mendel | CEO | Avenir Healthcare Group | Business Magazine |

For more than two decades, Eric Mendel has been challenging the status quo of the healthcare industry by developing several award-winning and innovative healthcare companies, including nursing homes, home care, assisted living, memory care, and a managed long-term care insurance plan.

In 2002, Eric joined as the CEO of Central Assisted Living, an award-winning innovative assisted living community in Queens. Under his leadership, the community has received several awards and accolades for its quality of care and a grant from the NYS Department of Health to develop the organization’s first free-standing Dementia Assisted Living Program for people receiving Medicaid benefits.

In 2007, Eric recognized the need for high-quality home care and founded Prime Home Health Services, which eventually served over 20,000 clients since its inception. This laid the foundation for Prime Health Choice, a Managed Long Term Care Insurance Plan to efficiently serve healthcare consumers’ needs.

Later in 2015, Eric decided to improve the state of long-term care and founded Avenir Healthcare Group. The New York-based healthcare group presently provides management, consulting, and administrative services to several assisted living communities and skilled nursing facilities in New York and New Jersey.

“My philosophy of ‘treat everyone as you want to be treated’ is apparent in every continuum aspect.” Explains Eric, “I believe the key to great care is focusing on the person, not the patient. It’s not just a mantra but a mandate, a responsibility to ensure your loved one receives the best possible care and comfort. This belief guides our every action. We don’t see doctors or therapists, bed numbers, or illnesses. Just people helping people.”

Eric is a board member of the Empire State Association of Assisted Living, NYS’s largest Assisted Living trade association. The Mayor also appointed him to serve on the Age-Friendly NYC Commission, which has helped NYC become a global leader in the age-friendly cities movement through various innovative programs. Additionally, he serves on the Maimonides Medical Center Cardiac Advisory Board and the historic Mount Carmel Cemetery Board of Directors.

Helping Assisted Living Communities

Under Eric’s leadership, Avenir Healthcare Group helps assisted living communities and skilled nursing facilities in New York and New Jersey by providing management, consulting, and administrative services. As a healthcare group, Avenir believes every individual’s surroundings and engagement in activities beyond routine care are massively critical to their recovery. To truly act as a home away from home, Avenir Healthcare’s facilities take extra care to provide a comfortable, relaxing environment and a packed schedule full of organized recreational and educational activities, including seasonal concerts, cooking, painting, crafts, local trips, movie nights and several other weekly and monthly events.

Tackling Challenges

Managing skilled nursing and rehabilitative care centers can be a daunting task. However, Eric has surrounded himself with a strong management team, always ready to take up new challenges from time to time. Additionally, the Covid-19 pandemic has brought several unique challenges to the healthcare industry over the last few years. However, utilizing modern technology, Avenir Healthcare Group has created various new ways to improve patient lives and overall care. Being a healthcare company, Avenir is also looking to stay ahead of the curve and make new and innovative ways to improve care for patients and residents.

Committed to Providing the Highest Quality of Care

Eric and his team’s mission at Avenir are always to be sensitive to the needs of every individual-patient, family, and staff alike. The organization is fully committed to providing the highest quality of care by honoring every resident and treating them with the respect and dignity they deserve.

“We don’t see doctors or therapists, bed numbers, or illnesses.” Says Eric, “Just people helping people. Unrelenting in our pursuit of care, benevolent in our approach to administering it, we promise to stop at nothing to help your loved one live life forward, to the fullest.”

Being a healthcare company, Avenir is always looking to expand wherever there’s a need for quality care. The organization also plans to expand by opening new locations in New York and New Jersey over the coming years.
