On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump said that he had a discussion on the phone with Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Ukraine’s President, and Vladimir Putin, Russian President, where he shared his thoughts on ending the three-year-long Russia-Ukraine war.
Talking to the media, Trump said Putin wants to end the war but he does not want to start it again after some time. After the call, Trump said both parties are looking for peace and I just want to stop people getting killed.
Ukrainian President Zeleskiy also shared the same; he said the discussion with Trump was a meaningful conversation where they both discussed how they can create peace and it should be long-lasting. The discussion was held after Trump and his defense secretary said that it does not seem possible for Ukraine to join NATO.
Trump has already said during his presidential campaign that he would end the Russia-Ukraine war, but he never discussed how he would make it possible.
Sharing a post, Trump mentioned that he and Putin agreed to begin negotiations and also invited each other to visit their capitals.
It was unlikely Ukraine would be able to return to its pre-2014 borders but, responding to a press question, he said some of that would come back.
Zelensky has been repeatedly saying that there can be no talks on Ukraine without Ukraine but this call with Trump and the Trump-Putin discussion proved otherwise.
However, the path to just peace, as Zelensky mentioned is neither going to be easy nor smooth the Ukraine.
Since the Russia-Ukraine war began, there have been no talks for peace. Now, the war is entering its third year. According to the report, former US president Joe Biden kept sending billions for military and other support to Ukraine and never discussed directly with Putin.
European nations such as Germany, France, and Britain, have categorically said that in any future talks regarding Ukraine, they must be involved. They shared their thoughts that the only way to bring peace is fair deals with security promises. They were all ready to provide more support to Ukraine to ensure that it stands in a robust position.
