India has touched a significant milestone in its artificial intelligence adoption, with nearly 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users the country is one of OpenAI’s largest global markets. The figure was shared by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman ahead of an AI summit in New Delhi, underscoring the country’s growing influence in the global AI ecosystem.
In an article published in The Times of India on Sunday, Altman highlighted ChatGPT’s ever-growing adoption across the country. The announcement comes as OpenAI prepares to formally participate in the five-day India AI Impact Summit, which begins Monday in the capital. Altman will attend alongside senior executives from several of the world’s leading AI companies, reflecting the summit’s importance in shaping the next phase of AI development.
India’s rapid growth in AI usage mirrors broader industry trends. With a young demographic profile and more than a billion internet users, the country represents one of the most dynamic digital markets globally.
OpenAI deepened its commitment to the market in August 2025 after starting its all-new office in the country’s capital, New Delhi, after months of groundwork. In line with India’s price-sensitive consumer base, the AI company introduced a sub-$5 ChatGPT Go subscription tier, which was later made free for one year to Indian users.
As global AI competition intensifies, India’s scale, talent pool, and digital infrastructure position it as both a critical market and a potential innovation hub. With 100 million weekly users already engaged, the country is quickly becoming central to the next chapter of AI expansion.
Altman also underscored the critical role of students in driving India’s growth. The country, he noted, now has the largest number of student users of ChatGPT globally. Classrooms, exam preparation, coding practice, language learning, and research workflows have increasingly integrated AI tools, making students one of the most influential adoption segments.
India’s student population has become a strategic priority not just for OpenAI, but for the entire AI industry. Major players are competing aggressively to push their cutting-edge tools into the Indian education ecosystem. Previously, in September 2025, Google offered Indian students a free one-year subscription to its AI Pro plan as part of its expansion strategy.
