Apple May Not Release Fully Mordernized Siri Until 2027

Mordernized Siri

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, tech giant Apple is facing severe challenges in revamping Siri for generative AI. Experts now expect a fully modern, conversational version might not arrive until iOS 20 in 2027.

However, significant Siri upgrades are expected before then. A revamped version is set to launch in May, integrating Apple Intelligence features announced nearly a year prior.

This iteration of Siri will reportedly operate with a dual-system approach—one handling traditional tasks like setting timers and making calls, while the other processes more complex, data-driven queries. Internally referred to as “LLM Siri,” a more refined version that merges both systems is expected to be unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, with a public rollout planned for spring 2026.

One of the most anticipated features, highlighted in Apple’s promotional material, is Siri’s ability to reference user data—such as calendar events—to recall a person’s name from a past meeting. However, it remains uncertain whether this functionality will be included in the May update. Reports indicate that Siri will remain a hybrid of its old and new systems for now, with traditional capabilities like web searches and timers coexisting with AI-driven enhancements.

This hybrid approach also extends to how Siri will interact with ChatGPT in iOS 18.4. While Siri will be able to pass some user requests to ChatGPT, the integration is expected to be limited. Moreover, the latest developer beta suggests Siri’s performance in its original tasks has declined, raising concerns about Apple’s transition to its AI-powered future.

Apple originally introduced Apple Intelligence in 2024, promising an October rollout. However, the company also confirmed that this AI-powered suite would be exclusive to newer devices, including the iPhone 15 Pro, MacBooks, and iPads with M1 processors or newer.

While Apple’s AI roadmap appears ambitious, delays and challenges in integrating generative AI into Siri suggest that a fully modernized assistant may still be years away.
